Know the Long-Term Effects of Having Rhinoplasty – Jakarta – Rhinoplasty is an operation that aims to change the shape of the nose. Typically, people perform these procedures with the aim of changing the appearance of the nose, improving breathing or both.
The nose is a respiratory organ which is divided into two structures, namely the upper and lower parts. The upper part of the nose structure is bone, while the lower part is cartilage. Rhinoplasty can change bone, cartilage, skin or all three.
When planning to have rhinoplasty, the surgeon will of course consider other facial features, the skin on the nose, and which parts you want to change.
Recognize the Side Effects of Having Rhinoplasty
Like other major operations, rhinoplasty also has several side effects and risks, such as:
- Bleeding.
- Infection
- Side effects of anesthesia .
Apart from that, it is very possible that there are other risks specific to the rhinoplasty procedure, but not limited to:
- Difficulty inhaling through the nose.
- Permanent numbness in the area around and inside the nose.
- The nose may appear uneven.
- Pain, discoloration or swelling that may not go away. There are scars
- A hole appears in the septum (septal perforation).
- Potentially requiring additional surgery.
Actions After Surgery
After rhinoplasty surgery, you need to rest with your head higher than your chest to reduce bleeding and swelling. Your nose may be blocked due to swelling or splinting of the inside of the nose during surgery.
In most cases, the internal dressing remains in place for one to seven days after surgery. Doctors also attach a splint to the nose to provide protection. Typically, the splint is in place for about a week.
Light bleeding and discharge of mucus and blood often occurs for several days after rhinoplasty surgery or after removing the bandage. The doctor may place a small piece of gauze with tape under the nose to absorb drainage.
Change the gauze as recommended by your doctor. In addition, avoid placing the drop pad too tightly against your nose. To reduce the chance of bleeding and swelling, your doctor may ask you to follow precautions for several weeks after surgery, for example:
- Avoid strenuous activities such as aerobics and jogging.
- Soak instead of bathing in the shower while your nose is still bandaged.
- Avoid blowing your nose.
- Eat high fiber foods, such as fruit and vegetables to avoid constipation. Because constipation can cause tension, thereby putting more pressure on the rhinoplasty surgery site.
- Avoid extreme facial expressions, such as smiling or laughing.
- Brush your teeth gently to limit movement of your upper lip.
- Wear clothes that button at the front. Avoid pulling clothing, such as shirts or sweaters, over your head.
Apart from that, avoid wearing glasses for at least four weeks after surgery to prevent pressure on the nose. You can wear a cheek rest or press your glasses to your forehead until your nose heals.
Don’t forget, use SPF 30 sunscreen when you are outside, especially on the nose. Too much sun can cause permanent, irregular discoloration of the nose skin.
